The complete Microsoft Surface line-up compared

Microsoft’s current Surface range includes four Windows devices: the Surface Pro, Surface Laptop, Surface Book and Surface Studio. They have some huge differences, so you’ll want to make sure you buy the right one.

Surface Pro

The Surface Pro is the cheapest of the four, starting at £799. It’s primarily a powerful tablet 12in running a full version of Windows 10, but you can buy a keyboard at an additional cost to turn it into a more portable and versatile laptop.

The Surface Pro is available to pre-order now from Microsoft, with a total of 6 configurations available:

Surface Laptop

Order from Microsoft now and read our Surface Laptop review.

The Surface Laptop is next in the line-up, starting at £979. This touchscreen laptop doesn’t have a detachable keyboard, so can’t be used in tablet form like the Surface Pro can, but it offers a more sturdy laptop design, a slightly bigger screen and a better battery life.

The Surface Laptop is available to pre-order from Microsoft now in four configurations:

Price Storage Processor RAM Where to buy
£979 128GB Intel Core i5 4GB Pre-order from Microsoft

It’s expected to ship by 15 August. You can find out more about the Surface Laptop in our Surface Laptop news round-up. You can also read: Surface Laptop vs MacBook.

Surface Book

Available from Microsoft now.

Next is the Surface Book, which is more expensive starting at £1,449. It has a 13in touchscreen display like the Surface Laptop, but it offers a higher resolution and better specs overall.

It’s essentially the Surface Pro but better (and more expensive) – the screen can detach to be used as a tablet, and it comes with the Surface Pen included. It has an incredible hinge, too, which means you can fold the Surface Book back on itself to be used in what Microsoft calls Draw Mode.

The Surface Book is already available to buy from Microsoft, and is available in five configurations:
